Riyadh – Sharikat Mubasher: The Fourth Edition of the Saudi Green Initiative Forum commenced today, December 3, 2024, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
This two-day event, running through December 4, is being held alongside the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP16), according to the Saudi Press Agency.
The forum brings together policymakers, business leaders, and environmental experts to discuss and advance climate resilience and sustainability. Key themes include land restoration, clean energy innovation, climate finance, nature-based solutions, and biodiversity protection.
Notable components of the forum include ministerial discussions, keynote addresses, and panel discussions featuring prominent leaders.
This year’s SGI Forum focuses on fostering discussions and presenting solutions to key challenges, including land restoration, cutting carbon emissions through innovative technologies, financing sustainable transitions to support livelihoods, leveraging nature-based approaches for climate change adaptation, and safeguarding the Kingdom’s biodiversity.
Additionally, the SGI Gallery will be open to showcase ongoing climate action initiatives across Saudi Arabia.
The gallery will showcase the Kingdom’s ambitious initiatives, including reducing carbon emissions by 278 million tons annually by 2030, planting 10 billion trees as part of afforestation efforts, and conserving 30% of the Kingdom’s land and marine areas. It will also feature discussion sessions with global experts, highlighting the latest trends and innovations in climate action and sustainability, fostering pathways to a more sustainable future.
Launched in 2021 by the Saudi Crown Prince, the Saudi Green Initiative seeks to involve all sectors of society in climate action, with the ultimate goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. This initiative highlights the Kingdom's commitment to tackling climate challenges such as rising temperatures, declining rainfall, sandstorms, and desertification, aiming to improve quality of life and build a sustainable future for generations to come.
