Riyadh - Sharikat Mubasher: Saudi Arabia’s Communications, Space, and Technology Commission (CST) announced joining the Green Digital Action with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) during the UN Climate Change Conference COP28.
This step came as part of CST’s commitment to enhance the Kingdom’s endeavors to enable digital sustainability, a recent statement revealed.
CST will be leading the “Foster a circular ICT industry” track as part of the Green Digital Action which consists of six tracks including: reducing ICT sector emissions, advancing climate solutions through open environmental data and technologies, implementing green standards, facilitating a green transition across all industries through digital technology, and leveraging digital systems for disaster alerts and early warnings.
By joining the Green Digital Action initiative, the CST eyes harnessing its efforts to develop solutions to address climate challenges, improve and implement regulations that enable the circular economy, and transfer to an eco-friendly digital infrastructure.
The Green Digital Action aims to enhance collaboration, fast-track industry-wide commitments to addressing climate challenges, and put digital solutions at the forefront of climate action.
On the sidelines of COP28, CST is organizing a panel discussion titled ‘Circular Economy’ to underscore the Kingdom’s efforts in driving digital sustainability, with the participation of ITU Deputy Secretary-General, Thomas Lemanoskas, and representatives from countries that participated in the E-Waste Management Regulations initiative launched by Saudi Arabia in partnership with the ITU.
The initiative will contribute to providing innovative regulatory solutions to the challenges facing the treatment of e-waste globally, along with raising awareness among policymakers and industry owners on the critical role of fair and practical economic regulations in reducing e-waste production and carbon emissions.
Through participating in COP28, the CST aims to promote the Kingdom’s efforts to enable digital sustainability, in line with its directions in support of the circular economy.
COP28 takes place from 30 November until 12 December, focusing mainly on a damning stock-taking of the world’s limited progress towards curbing the pollutant greenhouse gas emissions fueling the climate crisis.
