Riyadh - Sharikat Mubasher: Enowa, the water and energy subsidiary of Neom, plans to establish the first renewable high-voltage smart grid in the world, Peter Terium, CEO of Enowa, revealed.
Through this grid, Enowa will supply Neom with 100% renewable electricity that concurrently provides a 50% reduction of the corridor footprint, the CEO told Arab News on the sidelines of COP28.
“That’s a huge achievement given it’s the size that makes it complex. You know, one windmill, a refrigerator, and a television are all 100 percent renewable. But a NEOM within the Kingdom that eventually is going to have nine to 10 million inhabitants,” Terium said.
He added that limiting the number of corridors and executing part of the grid is necessary to ensure minimum disturbance to the natural terrain and minimize visual disruption.
Terium emphasized the importance of an efficient grid to reach 100% renewable electricity in Neom, adding that all solar and wind farms require connectivity to “bring the electrons to the customer.”
He noted that Enowa already established the first tenders of solar and wind power plants; meanwhile, the large green hydrogen plant being built will contribute five to six gigawatts of installed capacity for power production by 2026.
Furthermore, Terium noted that Enowa collaborated with the Ministry of Energy and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) to install the first carbon capture capacity into a gas-fired plant in the Kingdom.
In 2022, Neom launched Enowa to accelerate the development of world-class, smart, and connected energy and water systems.
